music: Hallelujah - Leonard Cohen

- Diablo 3. Box requirements claims it runs on my Mac. It won't in any playable sense, since I can't kill anything at 8 frames per second, and this is after turning it to below screen resolution and everything graphical turned off. I'm going to go off and do something else instead of angsting, but I'm pissed that Blizzard essentially lied to me.

- On the knitting front: got a couple projects.

- Fic has been on hold as I'm trying to tackle moving-related stuff right now and my brain is really tied up with OMG MOVING. I don't know, I think I need a good dose of squee and excitement back.

- I've been struggling with crippling levels of depression lately. Spending the whole day in bed moping levels of depression. I don't want to turn this into a pity party, so I'm going to just stop there.

And you know what? I'm going to steal a meme from dremiel. I'm going to post the first two lines, lyrically, from the first twenty songs in my playlist, and you're invited to guess the damn things. This is going to either be easier or harder because of all the foreign-language stuff on my playlist, but then ... considering my music tastes it's probably pretty easy to identify the foreign-language stuff on my playlist. So I guess it depends on how much you know. I'm going to skip instrumentals, stuff with the title in the first line, and weird stuff that doesn't quite work.

#1: Can it be true?/ Nobody warned you, nobody told you

#2: Can't get the stink off/ he's been hanging round for days

#3: Ein Flugzeug liegt im Abendwind /An Bord ist auch ein Mann mit Kind (Helpful clue: this song is based on Der Erlkönig.)

#4: I wrote your name/ Upon the back of my hand

#5: Follow me into the desert as thirsty as you are/ Crack a smile and cut your mouth and drown in alcohol

#6: Born to the false world the wanderer/ Storyteller the pied piper

#7: Just close your eyes and count to five/ Let's craft the only thing we know into surprise

#8: You've got some nerve coming here/ you've got some nerve coming here

#9: I'm careful not to fall/ I have to climb your wall

#10: Keep a light on those you love/ They will be there when you die

#11: Cut my tongue out Ive been caught out/ Like a giant juggernaut

#12: It's way too late to be this locked inside ourselves/ The trouble is you're in love with someone else

#13: Wer wartet mit Besonnenheit/ Der wird belohnt zur rechten Zeit

#14: Osaan sanoa kymmenellä kielellä kiitos/ osaan hyvää uutta vuotta toivottaa. (Clue: this one's not in German and it's been featured in a chapter of my gen fic timeline.) Guessed by synekdokee, "Rakkauden Haudalla", the Jonna Tervomaa cover version.

#15: I remember when I was a lad/ Times were hard and things were bad Guessed by dremiel. "Daddy Sang Bass" by Johnny Cash.

#16: Until your arms are strong enough/ Until you rest your weary hands

#17: Hear that lonesome whipporwill/ He sounds too blue to fly Guessed by dremiel. "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry", Hank Williams Sr.

#18: Ein kleiner Mensch stirbt nur zum Schein/ wollte ganz alleine sein

#19: She nursed him there, over a night/ I wasn't so sure she wanted him to stay

#20: I can't seem to face up to the facts / I'm tense and nervous and I can't relax Guessed by dremiel. "Psycho Killer", although mine is the Velvet Revolver cover of the Talking Heads original.

Yeah, I know.

Is it cheating any more than an American recognising Johnny Cash?

Re: #14, do people actually say Finnish looks like German? That's like saying Norwegian and Gaelic look alike, except that kinda makes more sense since they are related... But you get what I mean.

The song in question is, of course, Rakkauden Haudalla by Juice Leskinen. Or more recently by Jonna Tervomaa, I suppose, I don't know which version you have.

Yup, Skiriki sent me the Jonna Tervomaa version. It's also the song that taught me how "y" is pronounced in Finnish because that can be a handful for other language speakers.

PS: This is America. People think that anything that isn't in English looks alike.

PPS: To phrase it more accurately, after this semester spent applying for Study Abroad in Finland I've met a bunch of morons who probably will get their asses kicked in their exchange countries, including a moron who told me he was GOING TO CHINA like I should be impressed because I look Chinese so at this point I'm just vaguely annoyed with and disappointed in my peers.

Oh I never thought of the Y pronunciation thing. I've come to realise that the hard R thing is difficult for most foreigners though.

told me he was GOING TO CHINA like I should be impressed because I look Chinese

*headdesk* Oh my god what. It's people like that who make me happy I don't look Asian. I get enough stupidity from Asia-fetishists who flip their shit when they hear I'm half-Asian, even if I was born here and identify strictly with Finnish cultural identity -_-

Yeah. I'm ethnically Chinese, definitely, but not all Chinese people are from China, and besides China is huge, so someone from China may not actually care where he's going because they aren't from that region. >.<

So mostly I was just really tired of everyone assuming just because I look Asian I'm automatically from China.

It's a bit similar to calling all black people African American.

Somewhat ironically compared to your situation, no one ever seems to know what or where Kyrgyzstan is when I tell them that's where hald my genes hail from. Genetic geography, it is a mess.

My sisters are black and on one occasion a man came up to them and said, "I've been to Africa!" Dead freaking serious, like he had this cool bond with them. Another time (okay several, to be honest) when they were babies or toddlers we were asked, "where'd you get them" and "it's so nice to adopt from foreign countries!"

I feel so frustrated and helpless about it. In case you hadn't gathered, my parents and the majority of my siblings are white, though my parents have adopted 7 kids. Between the racism and the idiocy of "which of your sisters are real" I just don't know how to deal with people.

PS: This is America. People think that anything that isn't in English looks alike.

They probably think umlaut = ZOMG IT MUST BE GERMAN. I knew it wasn't German, but then I'm not in the States, so I guess I'm disqualified. :3 Also, jealous because Turisas amg.

Sorry to hear about your D3 issues. :( I know it doesn't help, but you are quite definitely not alone with them; the D3 Mac forums are teeming with similarly angry people.

Yeah, how dare you not cater to their yellow fever cravings! WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU. Also, people are stupid. >.<;

I don't even know what they get all OMG A GENUINE (HALF) ASIAN around me for, if I didn't tell people, no one would ever know I'm anything but pure-bread Finnish. Pasty skin and grey-blue eyes and mousy hair, just. What is the point of squeeing over my Asian heritage when I in no way represent it? It's like, like... buying a counterfeit designer bag and then squealing about owning Chanel? Dude I can't even think of a fitting parable, it's just plain *stupid*. Not to mention insanely marginalising...

I wager there's still something of the "Asian = exotic and foreign" mindset floating about where it isn't homogenous -- in no way helped because bits of Asian culture have become fads >.<; -- and you upend their stereotype applecart by not looking visibly Asian. It's dumb, dumb, dumb.
